About Cherthala...

Cherthala is a small and beautiful coastal town 43 kms south of Kochi and only 22 Kms from Alappuzha and also 30 Kms from Kottayam. Western boundary is the sea coast, the eastern border embraces the serene backwaters of Lake Vembanad. There are several myths about the name, history and logic says Karappuram -the former name- was donated by Cochin state to Travancore for an agreement to protect the former from the threat of Tippu Sultan. So, Chertha Thala -joined, edge of land- became Cherthala. According to the folklore, once a namboodiri(the priestly class) was travelling through the present day cherthala when he found the idol of the 'Devi'(The mother Godess) in a pond. The idol was found with its head immersed in mud. The priest took out the idol and established a temple at the loaction which is the present day Karthiyayani temple. The place is said to have got its name from this incident.Cher - Thala cher means mud and thala means head in malayalam.
                        The Ancient Karthiyayini Devi Temple and 500 years old Muttom christian Church, are the landmarks of this small town. 112 men from this village took part in the World War II -demonstrates the patriotic spirit and heritage.
                        Chethala Educational District Started functioning from 1996. Head quarters located at SNM Govt BHSS Cherthala Compound. 2 Asst. Edl. Offices , 19 Govt High Schools, 27 Aided High Schools, and 1 Unaided Schools.are now functioning under this office.
